MISTERI D'ITALIASACRO BOSCO DI BOMARZOIl Parco dei MostriNel 1552 Orsini Creò nella sua tenuta di Bomarzo un labirinto di simboli dove si potesse vagare sino a smarrirsi. Tra statue gigantesche e creature mostruose.
Dopo la morte del Principe Orsini il parco fu abbandonato e dopo secoli restaurato.
Nel Lazio, terra meravigliosa dalle tre esistenze: Etrusca, Romana e Medioevale, Bomarzo condivide la gloria di una storia illustre e possiede un'opera unica nel suo genere al mondo. "La Villa delle Meraviglie". Nei giardini delle ville laziali troverete degli elementi simili, ma prototipo di questi giardini è il "Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo". Lo volle il principe Pier Francesco Orsini detto Vicino "sol per sfogare il core". Lo ideò quel grande architetto che fu Pirro Ligorio, colui che dopo la morte di Michelangelo fu chiamato a lavorare in San Pietro. Senza che l'Orsini ed il Ligorio se lo immaginassero ne uscì un capolavoro che dura nel tempo, e che la fantasia popolare ribattezzò come PARCO DEI MOSTRI. Entrando in questo luogo, sarete accolti dai versi incisi sotto le due Sfingi. Passerete poi di sorpresa in sorpresa per l'improvviso apparire di animali e figure di pietra. L'elefante che sta per ucidere un guerriero, la lotta tra Draghi, l'Orco nella cui bocca spalancata trovereste posto per un pic-nic, la Bella addormentata nel bosco, Ercole che squarcia Caco, Orsi in agguato, animale a tre teste, Nettuno sull'alto di una vasca, Sirene ed altre figure interessanti, ed infine sopra la testa di un Orco, il Mappamondo con sorastante in miniatura il Castello Orsini a significare la potenza del Casato. Queste sculture scolpite nei grossi blocchi di pietra ivi radicati vi sembrano sorte dal suolo come prodigio. Il tutto risale al XVI secolo (1552) epoca in cui si sviluppava un ideale di vita fra il Principesco e il Cortigiano. Questo bosco ha ispirato molti artisti del tempo, come l'Annibal Caro, il Bitussi ed il Cardinal Modruzzo, per esprimere la loro meraviglia, vollero lasciare incisi sul posto "epigrafi e versi". Dopo la morte di Vicino Orsini nessuno si curò più di questo gioiello di arte manieristica che dopo secoli di abbandono è stato salvato dal solito oblio e restaurato per la gioia di intellettuali e scrittori, artisti e turisti che vengono da tutto il mondo per ammirare questo museo al'aperto.
By the middle of the 16th century, Vicino Orsini created, in his estate at Bomarzo, a labyrinth of symbols, where << Ladies and Knights >> might look for what they most wanted and wonder till they got lost.
He populated the << sacred wood >> with monsters and tortoises, obelisks, nymphaums and giant statues. After Vicino Orsini's death nobody cared any longer for this jewel of mannerist art, that after centuries of oblivion has been saved and restored.
In the region of Lazio, the marvellous land of the Etruscans, the Romans and the Middle Ages, lies the village of Bomarzo which shares all the glory of the region's illustrious history and possesses an historical site which is the only one of its kind in the world: "The Villa Of Marvels". In the gardens of other villas in Lazio you will find certain similirities, but the prototype of all these gardens remains the "Sacred Wood of Bomarzo", that popular fancy rebaptized as Monster's Park. Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, known as Vicino, wanted such a park "only to ease the heart". It was designed and laid out by the great architect, Pirro Ligorio, who was summoned to work at Saint Peter's in Vaticano after the death of Michelangelo. Without either Prince Orsini or Ligorio ever realizing it, a timeless masterpiece was born. When you visit this park you will go from surprise to surprise as animals and figures in stone suddenly appear: the Elephant that is about to kill a Warrior, the fighting Dragons, the Ogre in whose mouth you could pic-nic, Sleeping Beauty, Hercules tearing Cacus apart, Bears in ambush, animals with three heads, Neptune presiding figures, and finally a globe of the world balanced on the head of an Orc with a model of the Orsini Castle on top representing the power of his family. These sculptures carred out of massive boulders in situ, appearing to rise up out of the very ground as if by magic. It all goes back to the 16th Century (1552), the period which saw the development of an ideal of life between Prince and Courtier. This wood has inspired many important artists and poets of the time such as Annibal Caro, Bitussi and Cardinal Madruzzo wanted to express their wonder and wished to leave their "epigraphs and verses" carved here and there. After Vicino Orsini's death nobody cared any longer for this jewel of mannerist art and after centuries of oblivion has been saved and restored for the joy of intellectuals, men of letters, artists and tourists that come from all over the world to admire this splendid garden.
